Best Drill Bits of 2024: Most Durable & Fastest

What are the best drill bits of 2024? To find out, we carried out several tests including drilling speed tests and drill bit durability tests. The best metal drill bits and best masonry drill bits from the top brands were tested including products from DeWalt, Bosch, Makita and Milwaukee. The Adiseal Ultimate metal drill bits and their masonry drill bits were found to be the best drill bits out of all the products tested in terms of durability and drilling speed.

Best metal drill bit test procedure

To determine the best metal drill bit, we conducted a series of tests using a Scheppach DP60 drill press. The goal was to create 10mm holes in 6mm thick stainless steel (SUS304). Throughout the tests, the drill press maintained a consistent speed of 400 rpm. We employed 10mm metal cobalt drill bits from well-known brands such as Milwaukee Cobalt Red, DeWalt Extreme, Bosch Cobalt, and Makita. To ensure consistency, a 5kg weight was attached to the drill press arm during each hole’s drilling, maintaining uniform force and RPM. It’s important to note that the durability tests were conducted without lubricants, coolants, or cutting oils, although these can help reduce the bit’s temperature and extend its lifespan. The drilling processes were recorded and timed using video timestamps. After completing the tests, the Adiseal Ultimate drill bit emerged as the clear winner, surpassing all competitors in both the number of holes drilled and the time taken for each hole.

Best metal drill bit durability test results

10mm metal cobalt drill bitTotal number of holes drilled (in 6mm stainless steel)
Adiseal Ultimate cobalt135 holes
Milwaukee cobalt red75 holes
DeWalt Extreme cobalt39 holes
Bosch cobalt15 holes
Makita cobalt12 holes
Cobalt drill bit durability test results

The Adiseal Ultimate metal drill bit drilled nine times more holes than the best cobalt drill bit from Bosch and more than three times the number of holes than the best DeWalt metal cobalt drill bit.

Best metal drill bit speed test results

In addition Adiseal Ultimate being the most durable metal cobalt drill bit, it also outperformed all other drill bits in terms of drilling speed. Using the same test setup mentioned earlier, we measured the time it took to drill each hole for the first 10 holes and recorded the average. The Adiseal Ultimate bit consistently drilled holes significantly faster than any other bit, demonstrating its exceptional efficiency and time-saving capabilities.

10mm metal cobalt drill bitAverage time to drill each hole (in 6mm stainless steel) for first 10 holes
Adiseal Ultimate cobalt31.7 seconds
DeWalt Extreme cobalt38.5 seconds
Milwaukee cobalt55.8 seconds
Makita cobalt69.9 seconds
Bosch cobalt132.4 seconds

Adiseal Ultimate was over four times faster than the best cobalt metal drill bit from Bosch, significantly reducing drilling time and effort.

Please note, these are our test results from internal testing. We have recorded a video of each hole being drilled and they are available on request for your test accuracy verification purposes.

It’s worth noting that several non-cobalt metal drill bits like the Milwaukee Thunderweb, were also evaluated but excluded from the chart for fairness purposes. The non-cobalt Bosch PointTeq metal drill bit did not manage to drill any holes in the 6mm thick stainless steel SUS304 in our tests.

Best masonry drill bit

The Adiseal Ultimate range also includes the fastest no-hammer masonry drill bit and multi-material drill bit. It was found to be the best masonry drill bit in terms of drilling speed when drilling without hammer function on the drill. No-hammer drilling provides numerous advantages over hammer drills like lower noise, lower vibration damage and less chance of breaking the substrate. Adiseal Ultimate carbide masonry drill bit can drill into brick, concrete, wood, and a wide variety of other building materials. This carbide drill bit has been demonstrated to be the best heavy duty masonry drill bit with a hex shank.

Frequently asked questions about the best drill bits

What are the toughest drill bits in the world?

The toughest drill bits in the world are made from carbide, a very hard and wear-resistant material. Carbide drill bits are typically used for drilling into hard materials such as metal, concrete, and stone. They are also used for precision drilling, as they can hold a sharp edge for a long time.

What is the best bit to drill through thick steel?

The best bit to drill through thick steel is a cobalt drill bit. Cobalt drill bits are made from a hard and durable alloy of cobalt, tungsten, and chromium. This makes them ideal for drilling into hard materials like steel, cast iron, and stainless steel. They also have a high heat tolerance, which is important when drilling into thick steel, as the friction from the drilling process can generate a lot of heat.

What is the hardest masonry drill bit?

The hardest masonry drill bit is typically made from tungsten carbide, a material that is known for its extreme hardness and durability. Tungsten carbide is much harder than the materials it is used to drill into, such as concrete, brick, and stone. This makes it ideal for drilling through these materials without breaking or wearing out quickly.

Are carbide drill bits strong?

Yes, carbide drill bits are among the strongest drill bits available, known for their exceptional durability and ability to withstand heavy-duty drilling tasks. They are typically made from a combination of tungsten and carbon, resulting in a material that is exceptionally hard and wear-resistant. This makes them ideal for drilling into hard materials such as metal, concrete, and stone.

Which is better cobalt or HSS drill bits?

Cobalt drill bits are a better choice for drilling into hard materials where durability and wear resistance are important. HSS drill bits are a more versatile option and are suitable for a wider range of drilling applications, especially when cost is a factor.

Are Makita drill bits any good?

Adiseal Ultimate drill bits have been shown to perform better than Makita drill bits in numerous tests. The Adiseal Ultimate metal drill bit managed to drill a total of 135 holes in stainless steel whereas the Makita meta drill bit managed 12 holes only. The Adiseal Ultimate metal drill bit was also more then twice as fast as the Makita drill bit drilling into 6mm thick stainless steel (SUS304).
